THE PRINCIPALS OF HART, WATTERS & CARTER

The principals of Hart, Watters & Carter bring a unique and varied background to the firm.  In addition to activities listed in the following biographical sketches, you will find these dedicated individuals involved in a variety of civic organizations such as the Rotary and Lions Clubs, working on fund raising boards for local state and national charities and helping their local communities become better places to live.

CHARLES R. ("DICK") HART, JR. has been active in representing medium-to-large corporations, business cooperatives and handling real estate, tax, probate, and estate planning matters for many years.  Mr. Hart earned his B.S. at UCLA (1961), his LL.B at Hastings College of Law (1964) and his LL.M at New York University (1970).  He was admitted as an attorney in California in 1965 and in 1971 was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.  He holds memberships in the American Bar Association, the Santa Monica Bar Association (former Trustee), the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the State Bar of California.  Mr. Hart also lectures on tax-free real estate exchanges and other real estate matters throughout the state.

AS MANAGING DIRECTOR, THOMAS L. WATTERS is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Firm.  Mr. Watters chairs the Litigation Group and his practice involves complex and sophisticated real estate, business, corporate, estate planning, probate, wills, trusts, and insurance matters and litigation.  Mr. Watters, earned his B.S. in the Industrial Engineering Honors Program at Purdue University (1969) and received his J.D. from Chase College of Law (1975).  He is a member of the Order of Curia.  He holds memberships in the Santa Monica Bar Association (Board of Trustees, 1989-1992), Los Angeles Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the Ohio Bar Association, the American Bar Association and is a past-President of the West Los Angeles-Brentwood Rotary Club.  His interest and expertise in business and industry is reflected in his former memberships in the CEO Club, the Machinery and Allied Products Institute's Products Liability Council and the Reinsurance Association of America.

The firm also has experienced Associate attorneys.

BRET R. CARTER, is a Senior Associate and Member of the Litigation Group.  His practice includes estate planning and probate matters as well as insurance, real estate, business and corporate litigation in State, Federal and Appellate Courts.  He earned his B.S. from Iowa State University (1982) and his J.D. from Pepperdine University School of Law (1987) where he was a member of The Order of Barristers and The Moot Court Board.  Mr. Carter was awarded the American Bar Association Young Lawyer Award Achievement (1990) and is a former member of the Beverly Hills Bar Association Board of Governors.  He is a member of State Bar of California and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.  Mr. Carter also has significant business and real estate expertise as reflected in his memberships in the Los Angeles Venture Capital Association and the Apartment Owner's Association of Greater Los Angeles.  He is also active in numerous community affairs groups including The City of Hope.
